Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 09/26/2011

Number: 5

observing two different feeder sites in the garden, we think we have about five of them coming around still, maybe more. the syrup is disappearing much more slowly, but as soon as we put in new syrup they show up, and in fact one little one came over to the porch screening, flying close to and fro to get our attention...it was telling us to put in syrup since it was empty. we did an it returned immediately.
we have one who looks rather wounded. it is so sad to see, it sinks its head very deep down into the feeder and it has its beak open when and where others do not. It appears that a needle or reed is stuck in its beak and it can not eat normally or close its mouth completely. At first I thought it was its tongue but not I think it it some sort of lance. quite sad to watch.
we also had a hummer that appears to be a new arrival, who was eating profusely for some time from our crape myrtle flower heads..it then sat and gave itself a "sponge bath" while sitting on the bare branch of the tree..delightful site! it then fed at the feeder.
