Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 09/28/2011

Number: 69

I was at MP 266 on the Blue Ridge Parkway, at altitude 3532ft at an overlook called The Lump watching for broad-winged hawks. Most of the Monarchs passed over this location between 12 and 2pm! If I could have stayed longer the numbers would have been very much higher. I suppose the weather conditions must have been perfect for them and the wind direction sent them from NW to SW. The location is an exceptional area for spotting hawks and for seeing monarchs with binoculars and spotting scope. Some monarchs were at very high altitudes, others were not.
