Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 09/27/2011

Number: 360

Today is a beautiful day at the Kenesserie Road Tall Grass Prairie. Temp was high 70's F with light winds. This new 8 acre prairie was seeded with a high diversity native grass and prairie flower mix including butterfly (milk)weed and Sullivants milkweed in spring, 2011. Today I counted about 30 monarchs emerging from this prairie every 10 minutes. This continued for a couple of hours. Some of these butterflies are migrating and dropped into the prairie from points north and east for some nectar but many others are emerging from their chrysalis and drying their wings while snacking on asters, golden rod, blue vervain and great blue lobelia before taking flight high into the southwest sky.
