Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 09/29/2011

Number: 1

We have begun a monarch awareness program in Monroe County. Today at the Farmers Market I was told by a reliable source that there was a cluster of 7 monarchs last night in a tree on Stringtown Road. I have been seeing a steady trickle of monarchs through the area since late last week --2-10 per hour, but have made no attempt to make it a consistent daily observation. That is continuing today with 5 spotted moving down Main Street in Union. There is a long, open karst-lined valley (eroded limestone with caves) that runs down the eastern side of Monroe County in southeastern WV, between the uplift mountains (Peter's Mountain) to the east that stretch into Virginia and the erosion mountains to the west including the Knobs where I live. Union WV at about Lat: 37.6° N; Lon: 80.5° W lies at the center of that valley in Monroe County. Although I am seeing a few monarchs in directional flight up here on the Knobs, Stringtown Road and most of my observations have been from the valley area.
