Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 09/28/2011

Number: 500

October 2
I would estimate that at least half of the 400-500 Monarchs that I originally reported are still here.
We have had two wonderful wildlife photographers here today photographing the Monarchs. They mostly got shots of individuals on blooms along the creek bank.
We did not see any big roosts.
I posted a request for Monarchs last night on a TX Master Naturalist google group for our area and had five responses of people in and around Junction that are seeing an abundance of Monarchs. One mentioned they were feeding on 'Cowpen Daisey' and another on Blue Mist.

I checked on the Monarchs today and their numbers have definitely diminished.

Observed on Gentry Creek ten miles north of Junction, TX. I counted approximately 200 Monarchs feeding on blooming plants along creek banks in one area. Some were roosting. In another area on the creek I counted approximately 300 Monarchs feeding and roosting on native Pecan leaves. Both of the areas have been traditional roosts in the past years. Last year there were none, so this is encouraging. Blooming plants include: Salvia farinacea, Goldenrod, Mullen, Frostweed, Smooth Bidens, Buttonbush. Our area is in an extreme drought, but these plants are along the creek banks.
