Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 09/27/2011

Number: 1000

On campus of Abilene Christian University, thick in the oak trees and ground cover vines.

I think they came to our university campus because we have one of the few green spots in the community. ACU uses effluent water to keep the grounds green, and in these drought filled days, that makes it a kind of oasis. My friend in Guthrie also has well water to use on her yard, and she has some great photos too (Guthrie is NE of Abilene, about 100 miles?)

Yesterday (9/30) the numbers were greatly reduced. We had a "cold" snap (ha - everything is relative!) with a high of only around 80 degrees, and they were harder to spot. I found them roosting overnight for about 3 nights in a row - Tuesday (9/27)-Thursday nights (9/29).

We still have a few on October 3, but the majority of them have moved on.
