Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 10/01/2011

Number: 100

I arrived at Robert Moses State Park Field 5 at 2 p.m. and even before I got in the parking lot there were monarchs every where! They were most numerous in the dunes and on the beach going westbound. I counted 17 Monarchs on a single seaside goldenrod on the inner dune facing the parking lot. I also noticed that seaside goldenrods in full bloom. As the sun was setting I observed monarchs starting to gather in small groups in the pitch pines on the north side of the field 2 parking lot. They seem to favor wind buffered areas within the stands of pitch pines. It was really neat seeing so many of them fluttering about the trees over my head.
