Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 10/01/2011

Number: 58

At noon on 10/1/11, while walking on the Long Branch boardwalk near the ocean, I counted 58 monarchs in one hour both in flight and/or nectaring on goldenrod. The temperature was in the mid-upper 60's and it was partially sunny. I overheard people commenting on seeing a lot of monarchs this year. Many were flying very close to people.

This week, we spotted a tagged monarch in our back yard on tropical milkweed. Capturing the monarch, I realized it was one of those we released at my school 7 days earlier, 22 miles north of where we live.
