Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 09/30/2011

Number: 300

Yesterday (9/30) evening five miles east of Fort Stockton on I-10 just before sunset several hundred monarchs roosted in the trees of the campground we stayed at. I counted 45 monarchs in one tree and more were coming in. Many trees had five to 10. Today (Oct 1) there were many monarchs crossing I-10 in the low areas as we drove from Fort Stockton to Ozona. The land was parched. About 30% of the junipers had turned brown but the mesquite still looked good. Continuing east, from Sonora to Kerrville there were few monarchs crossing I-10.
