Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 10/01/2011

Number: 100

All weekend long (10/1-10/2), Monarchs were airborne and in
view at the Davis Mountains Preserve, often dozens if not hundreds at
a time. Then today (10/3), from Fort Davis to Alpine and on up US67 to Fort
Stockton, nearly always there were multiple individuals crossing the
highway at windshield height the entire way. East of Fort Stockton,
there were far fewer, and I mention this "path" as I more frequently
encountered these densities around Ozona or Sonora in other years, and
think the "lanes" or corridors may vary from year to year. Along these
lines were high numbers from the Davis Mountains Resort (Maryann
Kremesec Eastman, Marathon area (Matt Matthew York and around Gate 4
of Terlingua Ranch (Betty Alex) all reported on Facebook postings."

"Betty Alex I dodged Monarchs all the way from Gate4, through Study
Butte and into Panther Junction (Big Bend NP HQ) this morning around 930am. LOTS! No
big bunches, but 2-6 at a time all along the road. I think I actually
managed to NOT hit a single one (I hope). about a minute ago"

These reports are on the far western edge of the "Central Flyway".
They are seen in good numbers there, but not every year. Looks like it
won't be a good yr for the I-35 corridor (the eastern edge of the
"Central Flyway").
