Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 10/05/2011

Number: 14

We had a lull in activity on 29-30 Sept with only about 6 individuals at our 4 feeders. Then over the weekend, 1-2 October, the numbers rose slightly to about 8 individuals with only 1 of our native buff-bellies in the group. One other individual I cannot positively identify as it is not a buff-bellied, but not clearly a male or female ruby-throated either. (It has a mostly white throat with a narrow, oval gorget of red in the center of the throat, plus a few scattered dusky/grey spots on the breast and belly.) Now on 5 October our numbers are up again to 13-14 individuals, almost entirely ruby-throats. Typically there is only 1 buff-bellied in the group. It surprises me that there are not more of the natives; they may be finding other food sources as we have many flowers in bloom around town.
