Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 10/04/2011

Number: 1

Just saw my first Monarch of the season here in Dickinson in Galveston County, which is about 20 miles north of Galveston. Female was ovipositing on the Asclepias curassavica in the front yard. Butterfly seemed in pretty good shape and a little larger than normal. First one I've seen since last February. I had a number of them stick around all of last winter, but none at all during the early spring or summer. Been reading the reports from west Texas and it sounds encouraging. Same conditions here concerning the drought. Only "green" areas left are along waterways & almost no flowers at all. I imagine my milkweed will be getting hit hard this year by Monarch caterpillars, but that's exactly why I plant it!
