Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 10/03/2011

Number: 1

There are a lot of monarchs in Arizona right now - we are in peak migration. The winds were out of the south the last few days and are shifting more favorably the rest of the week as well with much cooler (and monarch-friendly) temperatures.

Last week we there were over 20 monarchs tagged in Canelo in SE AZ with 13 fifth instar larvae still around - the field is large so this is just a small sample. Last night my son and I spotted 3 very new looking monarchs flying in off the Salt River in Tempe. Believe it or not I have just over 70 larvae and pupae in my yard right now in the SE Phoenix area. The first 3 enclose today. Huge numbers for this tiny yard. (Thought it was just over 50 until I uncovered some milkweed under shade-cover in the garden.) Monarchs are laying eggs on South Mountain near downtown Phoenix.
