We have had a higher than
usual occurrence of monarch butterflies at Guadalupe Mountains National
Park this fall. One of our staff, Dennis Vasquez, reported going on a hike
into the Guadalupe Canyon area along the El Capitan Trail on Sunday, October
2, 2011, and they accidentally flushed hundreds of monarchs that were
resting in a large Juniperus deppeana (alligator juniper). I have noticed
several wafting along on October 3 and 4 in the Pine Springs area of the
park. I also had a few visiting the flowering lantana in my yard in
Carlsbad, NM on October 1 and 2.
