Sightings report image

Date: 10/05/2011

Number: 1000

October 6
Went back to Harvard Avenue on Ventnor beach this morning at 730am. Approximately 100 monarchs were still roosting in the black pine trees and junipers along the boardwalk. Some of the monarchs had their wings open, absorbing the early morning sun. As they warmed their bodies, one by one they drifted off the trees to nectar on the seaside goldenrod in the dunes. Temperature hovered around 49 degrees and there was almost no wind.

October 5
Monarchs were whizzing by the classroom windows today, so I went to the beach, Harvard Avenue in Ventnor. Counted over 1,000 monarchs from 5-6:40pm. Multitudes of monarchs nectaring on seaside goldenrod in the dunes. Monarchs gliding over the people strolling on the beach and boardwalk. Observed many butterflies beginning to roost in black pine trees along boardwalk. Temperature was in the mid 70s with a northwest wind of about 12 mph.
