Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 10/05/2011

Number: 20

All sorts of monarchs just hanging around from the early "Pre-migration" breeding population that arrived about Sept 12 in Maverick County.
Yesterday in my back yard: 13 caterpillars on 2 shoots of tropical milkweed [3-4 instar stage] all within 1sq. foot.
4 adults circling/egg laying/"elating" [lazily circling in warm sun below the canopy and out of brisk winds.] 2 with tags I'd afixed days earlier (hatchlings from earlier egg collections.)
7 5th instar caterpillars being reared in the house.
In Quemado Valley 20mi.N: 7 monarchs, none flying SW.
In Del Rio, Tx. 64mi. N.: 7 monarchs elating in below canopy along San Felipe Creek. None in directional flight.
Breezy w. temps between 70 and 88dF.
