Wow we have had a busy September/Oct at Gilroy Gardens, in Gilroy CA. The caterpillars we found in September are now all chrysalis' or have emerged, been tagged, released and sent on their way to the coast. (Pacific Grove and Natural Bridges, if you see any tagged butterflies they are most likely from Gilroy Gardens.) We have many in chrysalis form right now and have at least one or two butterflies emerging every day. We have a staff of 4 of us who go in daily to care for our "children" and those of you who have had experience with the Monarchs know they take daily care. I was going every other day, early in the morning, to collect caterpillars. We are finding fewer and fewer now when we look for them. We have had a couple of Butterflies there for the last couple of days, so maybe we will have more caterpillars soon. We have been fortunate to be able to share our "livestock" with others. We loaned caterpillars and Chrysalis to the Santa Cruz county fair, have provided caterpillars, chrysalis' and milkweed to Hellyer Park's education program and garden. So far we have had a very successful couple of months and I see a couple more very busy months ahead of us.
