Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 10/04/2011

Number: 10000

Video below is of one of the six roosts I saw in Sonora, Texas on Oct. 4 that contained between 6,000 - 15,000 monarchs. Thus the total number of monarchs roosting in Sonona on 10-4-11 was near 50,000. Only 4 monarchs in the whole town were seen nectaring in the residential yards (3 on yellow lantana) which I think shows the butterflies were not seriously hungry/nutritionally stressed despite the drought. The butterflies also ignored lawn sprinklers which suggests they were not water stressed either despite the drought.
