Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 10/06/2011

Number: 135

This was a unique experience for me. I sat down at 2:30pm today at the window of my home looking out towards the water's edge of Tangier Sound, Chesapeake Bay. My location is due west of Assateague Island State Park in Berlin, MD; on the Atlantic Ocean. It is about 40 miles by air I believe.

At my home I looked out the window and noticed a Monarch flying in front of the window, I continued to watch to study its path and flight...30 seconds later, another, both headed west into the sun...30 seconds later another, 1 minute later 2 more..and so on it went for the entire 2 and a half hours I sat there. There was a continuing stream of butterflies. I went to the other side of the house and saw them approaching from the east. Occassionally a group of five would come by in a few seconds time. As time went on I noticed some of them were turning south continuing to fly over land instead of water, in essence changing the route followed by the others. By this time it was approaching nightfall, maybe that had something to do with it. I would say I saw a parade of Monarchs, very impressive!
