Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 10/07/2011

Number: 40

Arrived after dark last eve and found a small roost (30-40)in our rear garden (city of Cape May). Went down to the point at 6:45 am today and found several small roosts along the beach -pines and in the state park. Quite a few monarchs were up early and leaving around 7:30 am; looked like it continued throughout the day--not a very big number like last year but definitely nice! Walking around in the afternoon along the beach front, monarchs were few on the goldenrod. But at the cottage the 3 butterfly bushes remained full of monarchs-coming and going all day. At any given time there were between 1-2 dozen on each bush along with an occasional painted lady, red admiral, skippers and sulfurs. Now at 6 pm only one lingers. All in all a lovely day.

Noteworthy: near Point Pleasant yesterday my husband observed a wave of monarchs flying south....It didn't seem like many arrived here in Cape May today-so we are hopeful there are more to come.
