Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 10/07/2011

Number: 1

I have been seeing lots of monarchs wafting through Allen (Collin County) lately, and found one monarch caterpillar on Asclepias viridis last Tuesday at the Connemara Meadow Preserve. The caterpillar was about 1 3/4" long, and looked healthy.

I have taken photos showing them nectaring on Maximillian sunflower in the wild, and Gregg's blue mistflower, and frostweed in the garden. Conditions are worsening here, with most small plants either completely dead/dormant, and many of the large trees suffering ill effects of the drought too. Human maintained landscapes are the best sources fro flowering plants in this area right now, and the monarchs are stopping by the yard daily to fill up on my garden flowers.
