Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 10/07/2011

Number: 27

I am a college biology teacher living on a private WMA (35 acres) and observe movements of plants (primarily) but also follow nesting of certain birds (primarily dickcissel) and the movement of Monarch butterflies. In 2009 there was a mass migration across our property. The count, which went on for 3 days, was in excess of 1500. Unfortunately, a computer hard drive problem resulted in loss of the photos. I can only hope, each year, that we will see another 'fall of monarchs' but fear that is a once in a life-time occurrence. This year, 1 hour of observations over a 1 mile walk yielded 27 butterflies on 10/07/11.
