Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 10/03/2011

Number: 1000

Date: October 3, 2011

Location: Sunset Point at Presque Isle State Park

Time: 7:25 to 9:25 AM

Weather: Cloudy, wind N to 10 mph, waves about two to three feet. Temp. about 51 to 55 F. Light misty rain at times.

Comments: Not much moving this morning with most birds heading east. Eagles, Peregrines, and Merlins seem to becoming quite regular on the watch. Unfortunately, it appears the cold front passed during the heaviest movement of Monarchs of the fall season. Evidence of this was the high mortality. Hundreds and perhaps thousands were washed ashore all along the beaches of Presque Isle S.P. Many were still alive, but wings were battered severely.
