Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 10/10/2011

Number: 1

Quite an amazing day. Saw seven different Monarch butterflies on a 20 mile round trip. Every single butterfly was flying south near the ground. Wind has been blowing at various speeds from the SE......temperature this morning was 71, now middle 70s. The last one I saw was in the woods on the edge of our back hill and was obviously newly emerged, probably today. My guess is that he was a 4th generation from last year's migrating female.
Interestingly, several of the Monarchs today were seen in wooded areas. No food there, but protection from the strong winds no doubt.
To see so many Monarchs this late is extraordinary from my point of view. They will need some very good luck weatherwise to survive the next couple of weeks. Forecasts now are for 50+ highs by Friday. Don't know if they'll get good north winds before then, but hopefully they will.
I named my last sighting today "Lucky7"..........he'll need it.
