Date: 10/10/2011

Number: 48

October 11
Just watched from 10:09 to 11:08.

Most in 1 minute: 3

Total for hour: 45

If there is going to be a hard edge to the migration through this region, then it's possible I missed it or it's still early.

October 10
I sat in the front yard from 4:40 to 5:40 making a count of the flow through this neighborhood.

48 monarchs in 61 minutes.

Most in one minute: 5

First 30 min.: 35 monarchs, then tapered off to 1 a minute.
78.8dF, 40% humidity

breeze from 140 degrees and monarch flight in same direction.
breeze sporadic between 3-5 mph.

Monarchs moving into grove of dense trees on Southeast edge of my and neighbor's property. About half are doing lazy circles around trees: Japanese yew and bull mesquite. Some nectaring on antigonon vine, cannas, hibiscus cresanthemums.

Can't tell if this is the precursor to the migration but all are working below the canopy and just over the roofcombs of houses about 20 yards back from the crest of the bluff (between 80 and 100' above the river vega of the Rio Grande.
