Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 10/12/2011

Number: 80

There have been lots of monarchs here. Sunday at the end of the day I estimated that there were 80 monarchs in the garden and around the building. That's more monarchs than I've ever seen at one time at MW.

The flow of monarchs has continued over the last three days and this afternoon some young volunteers (Kirin and Toshita) tagged 16 monarchs while chasing a much larger number out of the area. This is a remarkably late migration.

One of our lab reared monarchs tagged on the 5th was found in another Monarch Waystation over 4.7 miles to the NW yesterday. We had several days with 30 and 40 mph winds from the S, SW and SE last week so it's not too surprising that this monarch found itself further N than it's starting point. It's lucky it didn't find itself in Nebraska. We are releasing quite a few tagged monarchs, maybe some did.
