Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 10/10/2011

Number: 1

East of Oshawa this morning (about 1/2 hr. east of Toronto) there was a steady arrival of monarchs along the north shore of Lake Ontario, many arriving from the north. With a light southerly wind, some flew high over the tall embankment that drops down sharply to the lake, and continued soaring south over the lake. I would estimate seeing one per minute either heading over the lake or heading westward, stopping to feed on New England aster, clover and other flowering plants.

One butterfly, that appeared to be a red admiral, soared directly south over the lake, hit a thermal and suddenly disappeared high in the sky.
