Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 10/02/2011

Number: 1

For the past several years I could count on monarchs visiting our yard in August, especially the milkweed and blue mistflower. By mid to late August I had fresh monarchs enclosing. Last year the number of cats on our milkweed defied accurate count. This year: nada. The first two monarchs to appear in our yard came on September 13, one a female. Though I've had several since drift in to nectar, there has been no sign of eggs or cats. Our heaviest numbers came through on October 2nd, in ones and twos every minute or two.

An interesting side note--perhaps the result of the intense heat--i have had no aphids on my milkweed that normally act as aphid magnets.
