Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 08/28/2011

Number: 2

There were TWO Ruby Throated Hummingbirds, one sat still on an electric wire near one of two feeders. This one continually sat on guard duty protecting 'HIS' feeders. EVERY TIME the other one arrived and attempted to feed, the one on guard would swoop over and they would have an air dual!!! This went on for days and days .. with the other one [there was a third also] that fed successfully since I put the feeders in place [LATE!] in June. So it appeared that we only had 3 total. One only had brilliant green body with white banded neck, LARGEST bird. One other had perfect Ruby Throated markings. The GUARD BIRD had ruby throat, patches of green and the chest originally appeared to be a brownish/gray color with specks of white. AGGRESSIVE bird he was! Always swiveling his head around and looking up to ward off other hummers. ALL DISAPPEARED AFTER HURRICANE IRENE HIT HERE IN NJ! (Estimating date as 8/28/11) Reluctantly put the feeders away 10/10/11.
