Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 10/15/2011

Number: 127

For the past two mornings, 8 a.m.,there have been hundreds of migrating Monarchs getting nutrition and drying their wings on an Evergreen Sumac (Rhus sempervirens Scheele) We have had a terrible drought in the Hill Country of Texas, but rains came last wknd and the Evergreen Sumac began to bloom, typical of the species. The Monarchs have found the tree and are there all day long. I'm sure they are not the same ones from one day to the next. That part of my 1 acre "native plants" yard seems to be a haven for them. Took pictures this morning.
