Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 10/16/2011

Number: 1

Went to Dripping Springs to support my family in the Livestrong Challenge and was lucky enough to spot monarch butterflies. I observed five monarch butterflies at Dripping Springs High School garden outside of Austin, Texas. They were feeding on flowering Texas Bush Sage and Vitex, seemingly ignoring the flowering Turk's Cap and what looked like purple Lantana. It was 8am and the weather was cool. One of the butterflies I photographed looked really worn. Whist driving around the area, I noticed individual monarchs occasionally flying. I spoke with the owner of a native plant nursery in Dripping Springs. He commented he has been seeing small groups of monarchs moving through for the last two weeks. While in his gardens, I saw another monarch. Including the five in the school garden, one in the plant nursery, and ten flying solo over the course of the day, I saw approximately sixteen monarchs.
