Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 10/16/2011

Number: 10

I just posted about seeing Monarch butterflies near the Panhandle Butterfly House, in Navarre, Florida. I just looked on your site. I realized that the group of 10+ butterflies that I saw in some tall bushes with red flowers, that were not fluttering around like the other butterflies, were probably in an "overnight roost". It was about 5pm. The sun was starting to set. I didn't know that monarch butterflies only migrate during the day. At night, they come down to rest. They spend their nights clustered together in "roosts",(called aggregations or bivouacs). I wasn't sure just what I was looking at when I saw it, but I knew they were acting differently than the other butterflies. I kept going back over there to see if they moved, but they didn't. They were grouped several to each group on a 4-6 on flower or twig. there were others that were still hovering around the top of the bush. so cool!
