Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 10/15/2011

Number: 6

We had high wind warning conditions yesterday (10/15) through the day. We had 6 monarchs in our small grove of fruit trees. As the leaves the monarchs were clinging to blew off the trees, they struggled against the west wind to get back onto the plum and apricot trees. By dusk only 2 were left near the top of the apricot tree on the leeward side of the wind with an eastern exposure. Today's weather is overcast and cool (10 C) with intermittent light showers. The monarchs are still where they overnighted. We have a patch of wild asters (New England I believe) near the ditch but they are almost spent. I am concerned whether they will have enough energy stored to make it to Point Pelee. Our location is about 1 km northeast of the hamlet of Maidstone, Ontario (8 County Road 46 R.R. #2 Maidstone N0R 1K0) We frequently notice monarchs fly directly over our roof during fall migration. One aft!
