After 3-1/2 days solid of overcast skies and occasional flooding rain, the sun finally broke free and shined its glorious self down upon the remaining blooms of the bright, ultraviolet butterfly bush in National Zoo's "Zoo in Your Backyard" habitat this afternoon! Four monarchs appeared nearly as suddenly, two of which needed to bask for several minutes to warm up. Since they did this with their wings open, they were delightful subjects to photograph:-) One of the happy results is below...
