Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 10/17/2011

Number: 15

Today was sunny but very windy - 25 MPH from the SW direction which is the same direction that the Monarchs want to fly in but they can't so they are forced to stay put and search for flowers in areas where there sun but no wind. 15 Monarchs (all in good condition) observed from 10:00 AM to 10:30 AM at Clearville Park. Temp was 60 F. Nectaring flowers are now becoming scarce here although there is still some asters (much less than last week) and red clover. These butterflies will certainly be froze out because the weather in this area will be taking a turn for the worse starting tomorrow with gale force winds and cold temperatures forecast for the next several days and the season's first snow not too far north of this location. This weather system will spell the end of the 2011 migration in Ontario.
