Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 10/18/2011

Number: 1

Very breezy today. Dead trees falling. Power outages today due to trees touching lines.

After a week of seeing no wild Monarchs in Kingwood, fortune changed today.

While I left work today, I was greeted by one Monarch and then possibly a second one flying near my car. second one I couldn't identify for sure since it flew back into trees.

I decided to check out flag pole gardens. The orange zinnias are beautiful and appear to GLOW. Lantana and other flowers looking good. Tropical milkweed is finally growing new leaves and looks great. Found very few aphids on milkweed.

Now for best part, Nice looking Monarch (male) was nectaring on zinnias and was very intent on nectaring even with strong gusts.

Got in car and left and 100 yards away another Monarch was flying over road.

Too bad, I didn't have net and tags since I could have tagged at least one Monarch.

Lessons learned, I'll have those in car for next Monarch sighting.

Area is right next to Lake Houston. Lots of tree cover of pines, etc.....
