Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 10/14/2011

Number: 1

The front of the migration hit Austin this morning and continued all day. Before today, it had been onesies and twosies per day. This morning it was two, three, four, five every hundred feet down the highway (loop 360 on the west side and IH35 thru the heart of downtown). All were in directional flight SSW, 15-30 feet off the ground.

We had a wonderful soaking rain last Sunday morning 1.5 -2.5 inches in the area immediately around Austin with some areas getting as much as
8 inches. This was the first widespread rain since last June.
Flowers, grasses, and trees have responded incredibly quickly. You can almost see the leaves unfold. It is like spring!

The Monarchs may appreciate the cooler, moister weather, but they were not stopping for nectar at any of the gardens I worked in today.
