Monarch Fall Roost
Sightings report image

Date: 10/22/2011

Number: 200

Today I saw at least 200 monarchs nectaring and roosting in small trees in our woods. I had been seeing bright monarchs flying this past week one at a time, a couple each day. But it was a wonderful surprise to walk into our woods this afternoon and see this abundance of monarchs. There is one particular type of tree that they are feeding from, but I do not know what it is. The trees are about 15-20 feet tall with slender grey trunks. The favorite trees sometimes held 25 monarchs, some of which appeared to be resting while most were nectaring. There seemed to be a continuous sporadic movement of monarchs through the woods.
