Monarch PEAK Migration
Sightings report image

Date: 10/23/2011

Number: 200

At 6am my son checked the woods to see if the monarchs were in the trees and he saw only a few flying. At 8am I went into the woods and didn't see any. But by afternoon, they were back in abundance flying around and nectaring on the small trees exactly like the day before. Again, I saw around 200 variously flying, nectaring, or resting in the trees over about an hour of watching. I have added a close-up photo. Maybe someone knows what kind of tree this is? It has tiny nectar-producing flowers (?) that the monarchs love drinking from. I also saw some monarchs nectaring from the false garlic flowers which have appeared in abundance since we finally got 3 inches of rain 2 weeks ago.
