Monarch Adult Sighted
Sightings report image

Date: 10/24/2011

Number: 20

Today was a very warm, sunny day around 80 degrees F. In walking through our woods and pasture I observed about 20 monarchs: 9 flying, 6 nectaring on false garlic flowers, and 5 nectaring on trees (the same small trees that they fed from in the hundreds on the weekend). We have been in an awful drought, but 2 weeks ago we got 3 inches of rain. Now we have an abundance of the small white false garlic flowers that monarchs love. They go from one to another and seem to never want to stop nectaring. The flower stems often bend so much that the butterfly is resting on the ground while drinking. All the monarchs that I have seen seem very healthy, even the ones a bit faded or tattered, but most are bright and vibrantly colored.
