Signs of Fall

Date: 10/30/2011

Number: 1

Well, the geese are flying, the dark eyed juncos have returned to my yard, and the leaves have fallen. Several inches of snow have also fallen in areas around the Mohawk Valley. American Robins are diving down from the tops of spruce trees to grab crabapples from crabapple trees around my house. What really surprises me is what I found in the Adirondacks of New York. I climbed Giant Mountain last Monday. It's the 12th highest in the state and stands at 4627 Ft. above sea level. I found a flock of robins near it's summit. I was surprised to see them way up there this time of year. They were hanging around some conifers. Giant is found near Keene Valley in the high peaks region of New York. The Loons are still around. I found some on Green Lake in the town of Caroga, Fulton County. They were in winter plumage. In three months we will be looking forward to everyone returning. It really isn't that far away.
