Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 10/29/2011

Number: 10000

Altus and I saw at least 10,000 monarchs coming along the peninsula at the north end of the Lavaca Bay Causeway and across the causeway on Saturday (Oct 29th). One time we "counted" four hundred in the five minute trip across the causeway ... there were some drivers that certainly noticed them. Altus managed to capture 135 for examination. Today, Monday, Oct 31st, we made a 10 min drive across Lavaca Bay, the peninsula, and back and counted 144 monarchs flying hard from ENE to WSW. Today is clear, calm, and 78. Some big clusters formed late in the afternoon on Sat along both sides of Lavaca Bay and up and down the Tex Gulf coast. Altus finger picked 71 out of one cluster Sat night.
