Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 10/30/2011

Number: 1

My wife and I had lunch in the Rotary Sunshine Park on the shores of Lake Ontario in Whitby (20 km east of Toronto) today. It was a sunlit day and the temperature was 8 C (46 F) with a stiff breeze blowing in from the Lake.
There are almost no sources of nectar left in sight and we had a second night of frost last night. Yet, we saw two Monarchs on the wing. I was able to get to within about four feet of one of them where it was sitting on the grass among fallen leaves. It was a female in perfect condition, most likely recently enclosed. She took abruptly to the air when I took a step closer to her. There was also a Sulphur dancing in the sun not far from her.
