UNTIL THE SNOWSTORM OF 10/30 I'D HOPED TO FIND A MONARCH ON-OR-AFTER THAT DATE. BUT A 9" SNOWFALL AND FROSTY MORNINGS HAVE INTERVENED!
A LAST MONARCH VISITED OUR GARDEN ON 10/25. HE DRIFTED OVER THE FENCE ON A COOL BUT SUNNY MORNING, SAMPLED SURVIVING ZINNIAS, FLEW LOW (AND SOUTHWARD) ACROSS THE MEADOW, AND WAS GONE.
TWO FIRSTS: I FOUND A SINGLE MONARCH EGG ON 9/30, WEEKS LATER THAN USUAL; AND A VERY LATE MONARCH CATERPILLAR, ON 10/18. I HAVE REARED BOTH AND THIS AFTERNOON SHIPPED THE CHRYSALISES TO A YOUNG FRIEND IN SOUTH CAROLINA.
