Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 10/31/2011

Number: 40

We were in a garden very near the beach, 50 ft. It was about 6:00PM. Saw approx. 30-40 Monarch's feeding on flowers. Then as the sun began to fade they began roosting on the sunny side of a pine tree next to the garden. At first just three or four fluttered and settle in the sun on the pine needles. Then more and more came and settled near by always in the sun. As the shadows covered the tree some moved to the tree nearby that still had some sun. Could see groups of them as it became dust. In the morning soon after sunrise it was windy, cool (40's) and rainy and they were gone. I did not see them go. Today (Nov 1, 2011), at 9AM saw four feeding on the same flowers. Left area to return to Mebane, NC so no further opportunity to observe.
