Signs of Fall

Date: 11/01/2011

Number: 1

After gathering up fallen leaves in the yard to put to curb for borough removal ( weekly event the first week started Oct 12th) I look at the trees to see how many more leaves are to fall. In my yard and my next door neighbors yard we have a total of 7 maple trees. Of the 7 their are 3 different kinds of maples. One tree has lost all of its leaves. another about 3/4 of it leaves are gone. Two more are about 1/2 leaves gone. Two more about 1/4 leaves have fallen and one still has alot of green in it and hasn't lost too many... which means I'll be dealing with these maple leaves for another 3 weeks or so. We also had an early record setting snowfall event on Oct. 29th. We received over 4 inches in our location due to our elevation of around 1340 feet, among the highest elevations in Allegheny county. We also have had 3 frost in the last 5 days. The first one on the morning of Oct. 28th Made some amazing, beautiful designs on the car. The frosts and snow hasn't killed our flowers yet as we are way behind in getting the garden plants and flowers out of the ground. Part of me likes to keep the flowers going for some lucky insects and bees that come out on the few warmer days to come. In the last couple days seen a few gray squirrels dashing about with acorns in their mouth. The honeysuckle bushes, which are the first to leaf out still have mostly greenish leaves.
