Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 10/27/2011

Number: 100

A cold front moved into the Bryan-College Station area, Brazos County, Texas, mid-day on Thursday, Oct. 27, 2011. We could see the dark clouds many miles to the north a couple hours before it reached us. Out in front were hundreds of Monarchs, moving southwesterly. During one hour period I counted at least 75 individuals, maybe twice that number, at various heights. Once the front arrived, I did not see any more of the flying Monarchs; they apparently had moved on with the front. However, the number of Monarchs feeding in our yard, especially on a large blooming crucita (Eupatorium odoratum), increased from six to eight to twelve to fifteen. That number remained about the same, with some moving out and others moving in, until just before dark. Only one remained at dark. None were seen the next day and today (10/29).
