Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 11/02/2011

Number: 1

At first, I thought it was just another leaf falling from the trees. But it wasn't - it was a solitary monarch trying to fly to the south, far away from the certainty of freezing November temperatures. I was amazed that it had survived this long. We have had several nights of below freezing temps and heavy frost in the mornings. Sadly, the cold has killed the few remaining sources of nectar. There are a few blooms, and we always let the broccoli go to flower for the bees that are still active on sunny days. I can't remember seeing monarchs quite this late before.
