Signs of Fall

August 26, 2011 - Sharp-shinned Hawk returned to back yard habitat. It usually doesn't return until September, but it was close enough. It usually leaves for more wooded and mountainous areas in the spring, about March. I don't know if it is the same hawk, off-spring, or other hawks, but every year at least one comes and goes like "clock-work." Last year there were at least two different ones, because they worked as a pair to pounce on unsuspecting small birds.

Last season, or possibly the season before, I saw something really unusual. A Coopers Hawk, the first time I had seen one in the yard, was fighting with one of the crows that frequents my yard everyday. I was surprised to see the crow win, as the hawk flew on the fence, and then away. I only saw the Coopers one other day after that.

What's really unusual, is that I live on Main Street, and have a small yard. I even had an American Kestrel late one winter. I guess the raptors will go wherever, whenever, the prey is plentifull.
