On Saturday, Nov. 5, 2011, while cutting back and cleaning out my butterfly garden after the snowstorm the week before, underneath a pile of zinnias and boneset that had been knocked over and lain under a foot of snow for several days, was a live monarch. The butterfly had miniature wings, but a full body and climbed to the top of the remaining flower and sat in the sun. It looked like a spent bloom. It was very sad.
This is the same garden where at the end of April, I reported a monarch laying eggs on milkweed. So, this is 8 months out of the year that we have had monarch activity in the Northeast.
